Give your home a fresh look with these budget-friendly decorating ideas that make a big impact!
I love updating and decorating my home on a budget. Why spend a lot when you can get a great look for less?
Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite low budget home decor ideas that make a big impact. Whether you’re doing a full room makeover, adding a statement piece, or just refreshing a space, you don’t need to spend a lot to make your home beautiful.
Some of these budget-friendly decorating ideas require a bit of DIY, but don’t worry – they’re easy to do and totally worth it!
1. DRESS UP YOUR WINDOWS
Custom window treatments can get pricey, but you can achieve the same look without breaking the bank. Check out more affordable stores like HomeGoods, IKEA, and Overstock for great curtain options. I love my white curtains from IKEA and green ones from Overstock – I highly recommend them!
Want a bolder look? Try painting your interior windows a deep charcoal gray or black (I used Iron Ore) and pair them with bamboo shades.
DECORATING TIP: Hang curtains halfway between the top of the window trim and the ceiling (or crown molding), and make sure they’re wide enough so the edges just touch the sides of the windows..
2. CREATE AN ACCENT WALL
I love adding drama with accent walls and architectural details. You can paint the end of a hallway, use bold wallpaper in a bedroom, or create a custom wood wall treatment.
Renting? Removable or temporary wallpaper is a perfect way to update your walls without a long-term commitment.
Have you thought about painting your ceiling? It’s a fun way to add color or even wallpaper to a space.
3. ADD WALL MOLDING
Board and batten molding and plank walls are my go-to wall treatments for giving a room a dramatic style boost on a budget.
4. INCORPORATE A UNIQUE PIECE OF FURNITURE OR DECOR
While big box stores are great for home essentials, shopping vintage is the best way to add a custom touch to your decor. Choose a unique piece of furniture instead of a basic TV stand, swap out ordinary art for a one-of-a-kind vintage oil painting, or replace standard lighting with a cool antique fixture.
5. ADD PLANTS
Incorporating plants is an easy way to bring life, texture, and a pop of color to any space. If you’re making the switch from faux to real plants, these low-maintenance houseplants are my go-to choices for simple care and upkeep.
6. PAINT
I’ve painted everything from windows and doors to walls, furniture, and decor, and I’m always amazed by the power of paint. A simple can of paint can completely transform a room or give a dated piece of furniture a fresh new look.
7. CHANGE LIGHTING OR CEILING FANS
Swapping out an old lamp, fan, or light fixture for one that suits your style is a DIY project anyone can tackle. I’m a big fan of adding vintage lighting to my home. If you love the vintage look too, this round-up of vintage-inspired schoolhouse lights might be just what you need.
8. UPDATE HARDWARE
Don’t just stop at cabinets. Swapping out the hardware on furniture can make as much of a dramatic difference as replacing bathroom knobs or kitchen cabinet pulls.
9. CHANGE THROW PILLOWS
I love rotating and switching decor, especially textiles, blankets, and throw pillows, from one room to another. It’s one of my favorite ways to refresh and update a space without spending much.
10. UPDATE DOORS
Boost your curb appeal by painting or replacing your front door. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, consider adding a barn or vintage door to a closet, pantry, or laundry room.
Facebook Marketplace, Habitat for Humanity, and auctions are great places to find unique and affordable vintage and antique doors.
11. ADD A RUG
The right-sized area rug can instantly tie a room together, anchor your furniture, and complete the overall look. Plus, it’s a great way to add color and texture to any space.
I know it can be frustrating when your home isn’t quite where you want it to be, but remember, creating a home takes time. Enjoy the process, no matter where you are in the journey.
